The Bhai Ghanayya Ji Charitable Trust was established on May 17th 1993 running as ‘Unique Home’ which looks after unwanted, unclaimed or orphan girls whom society shuns. In Punjab, India and many places worldwide, it's a dishonor to birth a girl because of the expense girls bring, especially to families living in poverty and abortion is illegal in India so families' will go to extreme measures to dispose of newborn girls, often against the own mother's wishes. In attempt to save female fetuses from illegal abortions, it has also become illegal to know the gender of a child prior to birth. The baby girls are found by road sides, left by rivers, or dropped directly to Unique Home, in Jalandhar, Punjab. The current seva (service) is being done by Bibi Prakash Kaur and a handful of other women, many of whom were left as babies themselves. In a state infamous for female infanticide, Unique Home houses 60 abandoned girls.
